Google once again surpassed its own record in terms of device activation. This was revealed by no other than Andy Rubin, Vice President at Google. Rubin made the announcement over Google+ as well as on Twitter. The post says: “There are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day.” He later on explained how they account for such activations, such that “for those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don’t count re-sold devices), and ‘activations’ means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.”
This means that Google made a very significant leap from its 500k daily activations in June. It was only last month when the search giant also revealed that they were already up to 550,000 device activations every day. More impressive revelation was that there are now over 200 million activated devices under the Android platform around the globe.
Most industry experts and analysts are attributing this growth to the recent launch of Android’s latest Operating System, the Ice Cream Sandwich. This is due to the fact that Android device manufacturers have also been very competitive and are always on the race to provide the updated ICS on their product line-up. Aside from an improving Android OS, its competitive and affordable price range makes Android the more favored platform most especially at a time when economic concern is at a global scale. Another contributor is the expansion of the tablet segment, adding up to the diversity of choices in the field is the emergence of new Android players like the Kindle Fire.
The competitive environment within the Android ecosystem is very conducive to Android’s market share domination drive. Google and some market analysts are predicting a 1 million daily activation within the first quarter of 2012. Well, that is a very bold assumption, but who knows? Google has always proved that no record is impossible when it comes to Android. And that’s the very reason why Android is phenomenal.
