3 new LG devices get CyanogenMod nightly support; Optimus Black makes its return

Ricardo Cerqueira, a member of the CM team and LG Android device guru, has added official CyanogenMod nightly (CM7 for the time being) support for three new LG devices -- The LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus Pro, and the LG Optimus Hub -- and has once again made support for the LG Optimus Black official after a short hiatus.  Here in the states we're not too familiar with these devices, but we have plenty of American counterparts that are relatively close, so this may make things much easier to support our LG devices as well.  Quality hardware and specs, meet quality software.  It's sounds like a hell of a match.

Android 4.0 Port Gives DROID Bionic Taste Of Ice Cream Sandwich Glory

The list of devices running some sort of Ice Cream Sandwich build is steadily growing by the day. While most Android users are anxiously waiting for their particular phone to be graced with ICS— whether an official version or through a port, at least owners of the Motorola DROID Bionic have reason to smile today. We already know Motorola plans on upgrading the device to Android 4.0 in the not-too-distant future, but many of us just can’t wait for Motorola to bring ICS with their BLUR topping to the Bionic. As such, some crafty developers took matters into their own hands and decided to bring an Alpha ICS build to the Bionic.
Based off CM9, the ICS build is for the most part fully functional too. The touchscreen, capacative buttons, bluetooth and built-in screenshot are among the items that work like a charm. However there’s one major function that’s missing at this time and it’s a big one– the 3G/4G data does not work as of right now, though the developers are trying to work the kinks out and will likely get data working sooner than later. In the meantime, there’s always WiFi, right? Be sure to hit the DroidForums link below for additional details and progress of the ICS build for the Bionic.

Amazon Enjoys Record Year For Kindle Family

The celebration continues at Amazon. In addition to the Kindle Fire outselling the competition, Amazon can now lay claim for its Kindle family having record-breaking sales. While not giving a specific number, the company claims “customers purchased millions of Kindle Fires and millions of Kindle e-readers”. It isn’t as if it’s a complicated formula for Amazon either. That attractive $199 price point and assortment of features makes it much more accessible for consumers wanting to enjoy a tablet experience. All of this adds up to the Kindle Fire being the best-selling product on Amazon.com’s mobile website and across all of Amazon.com’s mobile applications.
Also of note are the successes of Kindle book downloads & sales from authors as well as the sales of products from 3rd party businesses. Amazon highlights “In 2011, Kindle Direct Publishing and CreateSpace author CJ Lyons reached #2 on the Amazon best seller list, #2 on the New York Times best seller list, and #4 on the USA Today best seller list”. The company also points out “the number of sellers who exceeded $5,000 in sales during the holiday season increased 44 percent year-over-year. For the year, businesses on Amazon sold hundreds of millions of units worth billions of dollars worldwide”. The champagne certainly must be flowing at the Amazon corporate offices even though we’re still a few days from the new year. Hit the break to see the full presser from Amazon.

Get 50GB of Storage Through Box.com/net Without Root With This Sneaky App

If you are the owner of a Sony Xperia Play or any one of the various LG smartphones then you should be aware of the deal where Box is giving away a 50GB upgrade to its cloud storage service until the end of this year. This means that you have until the day after tomorrow to get in a 50GB lifetime storage limit. This deal however, did leave the rest of us out in the cold. Perhaps the reason for this was some sort of promotional deal between, Box, LG, and Sony as a way to make their phones more marketable, but alas, I do not know for sure.

But fear not if you aren’t the owner of a Xperia and LG smart phone as the folks over at XDA have created an app that will give any Box account the 50GB upgrade. Thanks to redphx you can do this without needing to root and editing your build.prop or even witchcraft. All this program requires is the ability to log into your Box account.

Just a heads up, this app does require permission for Internet Access which may frighten folks as you are using your login in to get this deal. While the developer assures everyone using the app that neither email or password is stored it’s hard to tell in this day and age. It’s recommended that you change your password after you use this program which should help you feel more comfortable after you do use this app. After using this app it does show me as having 50GB of storage on both the web site and in the app.

With that said, I would recommend going out and trying the app by following the link below. You do not need to keep the app installed to keep the 50GB of storage so you can use it and uninstall it when you’re done. I would get on this before Box wises up and fixes the workaround or before the ball drops the day after tomorrow and the deal is gone. Anyone out there jump on this deal yet?

Firmware Update Now Available For Asus Transformer Tablets

A new firmware update has been released by Asus for their original Transformer tablet PCs and is now available OTA as version 8.6.5.21-20111216. (This device should not to be confused with its successor, the Transformer Prime.) The update addresses HDMI problems some owners experienced while operating the tablet with newer HDTVs and it enhances stability and incorporates input lag reduction fixes too.
The Android version remains the same and it is said that this will be the final such firmware update until the big jump to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

If you live in the US, UK, Taiwan or Germany the update is now available for you and any Transformer devices with generic WW SKU.

Andy Rubin: “There were 3.7 million Android activations on 12/24 and 12/25″

A week ago Andy Rubin told us that Android activations are now at 700,000 per day. Of course as one might expect Christmas should see a boom. If you’re wondering how many Android devices were activated, according to Andy, it hit 3.7 million for just 12/24 and 12/25. If you’re doing the math, that’s an average of 1.85 million per day or a 164% increase. Don’t expect these numbers to continue, but things sure are looking good for Android.
Things aren’t so bad in Apple land either. Earlier reports suggested that both iOS and Android hit roughly 6.8 million combined for the same two days. Now with Andy’s figure of 3.7 million, we can safely say that iOS devices were around 3.1 million. Android was victorious, but both camps have to be quite satisfied.

HTCDev Site Announces that All Phones Launched After September 2011 are Now Unlockable

Great news coming out of the HTC camp today as they updated the HTCDev website confirming more devices are officially able to be unlocked. Today’s update is as follows:
All HTC Android devices launched after September 2011 are unlockable. The website will be updated accordingly to
reflect this in the coming weeks. We continue to work on models launched prior to September 2011, please check back often for the status of older devices.

Word has it that although the HTC Vivid and HTC Rezound are not on the ‘official’ list, they are still able to be unlocked using the web tool. If you own any newer HTC device and are wanting to unlock its boot loader, it might be worth your while giving the web tool a try. If you have any luck, let us know in the comments section below, and be sure to tell us what device you are using. Thanks!
